04-22-03 - Voivod’s Jason Newsted Hospitalized, Misses First Show In
17 Years.
Jason Newsted missed his first show in 17 years, a source close
to the band tells antiMUSIC. What kept the hardest working bassplayer
in rock from taking the stage when Voivod rolled through Anaheim,
Ca this week? Food Poisoning.
Newsted was taken to an area hospital at approx. 3 PM on Monday
where he was diagnosed with food poisoning and severe dehydration.
He is reportedly recovering but it is uncertain whether he will
be able to perform with Voivod tonight in Las Vegas. Voivod was
scheduled to perform on Monday night at the House of Blues in Anaheim
but were forced to cancel the show due to Newsted’s illness.
Co-headliners Sepultura still performed and gave the audience a
special bonus during the encore when they were joined on stage by
members of Voivod to perform the classic song “Voivod”
from the group’s 1984 debut album “War and Pain”.
Despite this setback, the group
is reportedly energized by the addition of their longtime friend
Newsted on bass and a source close to the band tells antiMUSIC that
they are “like four brothers out on the road.”
We asked if there was any worries
in the group when Jason decided to sign on to play bass with Ozzy
but the band were reportedly “stoked” about it since
they “love Ozzy”. So no fears for Voivod fans on that
front although Orange County fans will now have to wait a couple
months for Ozzfest to roll through Southern California to catch
the group live.
